CFI Instrument Rating Practical Test Prerequisites (FAA-PTS-8081-9B)

An applicant holding a flight instructor certificate who applies for an additional instrument rating on that certificate must:
  1. hold an effective pilot certificate with an instrument rating
  2. have at least 15 hours as pilot-in-command in the appropriate category and class aircraft
  3. have passed the appropriate knowledge test since the begining of the 24th month before the month of the practical test
  4. have an endorsement from an authorized instructor certifying that the applicant has been given flight training in the areas of operation listed in 14 CFR part 61, section 61.187, and a written statement from an authorized flight instructor within the preceding 60 days, in accordance with 14 CFR part 61, section 61.39, that instruction was given in preparation for the practical test. The endorsement shall also state that the applicant is prepared for the practical test and has satisfactory knowledge of the area(s) in which the applicant was deficient on the knowledge test.
