D. Logbook Entries Related to Instrument Instruction

    2. Preparation of a recommendation for an instrument rating practical test, including appropriate logbook entry
      a. A person who applies for an instrument rating must receive and log training from an authorized instructor in the following areas of operation (61.65 (c))
        1) Preflight preparation
        2) Preflight procedures
        3) Air traffic control clearances and procedures
        4) Flight by reference to instruments
        5) Navigation systems
        6) Instrument approach procedures
        7) Emergency operations
        8) Postflight procedures.
      b. A person who applies for an instrument rating must have logged the following (61.65 (d))
        1) At least 50 hours of cross-country flight time as pilot in command, of which at least 10 hours must be in airplanes for an instrument—airplane rating; and
        2) A total of 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time on the areas of operation of this section, to include—
          a) At least 15 hours of instrument flight training from an authorized instructor in the aircraft category for which the instrument rating is sought
          b) At least 3 hours of instrument training that is appropriate to the instrument rating sought from an authorized instructor in preparation for the practical test within the 60 days preceding the date of the test
          c) For an instrument—airplane rating, instrument training on cross- country flight procedures specific to airplanes that includes at least one cross-country flight in an airplane that is performed under IFR, and consists of—
            i) A distance of at least 250 nautical miles along airways or ATC-directed routing
            ii) An instrument approach at each airport; and
            iii) Three different kinds of approaches with the use of navigation systems
      c. After the instrument rating applicant has satisfactorily completed the training and acquired the aeronautical experience, the authorized instructor may endorse the pilot's logbook or training record certifying that s/he is prepared to take the required practical test:
        "I certify that (First name, MI, Last name) has received the required training of 14 CFR 61.65(c) and (d). I have determined that s/he is prepared for the Instrument Airplane practical test."

      d. Flight instructor instrument rating
        1) Person applying for flight instructor certificate instrument rating must receive and log flight (in the appropriate category and class of aircraft) and ground training on the applicable areas listed in section 61.187 from an authorized instructor who certifies that the applicant is proficient to pass a practical test on those areas of operation:
          a) Fundamentals of instructing
          b) Technical subject areas
          c) Preflight preparation
          d) Preflight lesson on a maneuver to be performed in flight
          e) Air traffic control clearances and procedures
          f) Flight by reference to instruments
          g) Navigation aids
          h) Instrument approach procedures
          i) Emergency procedures
          j) Postflight procedures
        2) Person applying for flight instructor instrument rating to be added to a flight instructor certificate
          a) Must meet the applicable eligibility requirements of 61.183
          b) Is not required to pass the knowledge test (again) on the areas listed in 61.185(a)(1)
