II. Technical Subject Areas
D. Logbook Entries Related to Instrument Instruction
-
1. Logbook entries or training records for instrument flight/instrument flight instruction or ground instruction given
- A distance of at least 250 nautical miles along airways or ATC-directed routing;
- An instrument approach at each airport; and
- Three different kinds of approaches with the use of navigation systems;
-
a. 14 CRF 61.51 (Pilot logbooks) requires pilots to log training time and aeronautical experience used to meet the requirements for an instrument rating and the recent flight experience required by 14 CFR 61.57
b. For each flight or lesson, pilot must log
-
1) Date
2) Total time
3) Departure and arrival locations
4) Name of safety pilot if one is required
5) Type of experience
-
a) Solo (pilot is sole occupant of aircraft)
b) Pilot in command (PIC)
c) Second in command (SIC)
d) Training (flight or ground) from an authorized instuctor
e) Training from an instructor in a flight simulator (FS) or flight training device (FTD)
f) Condition of flight
-
i) Day or night
ii) Actual instrument
iii) Simulated instrument conditions in flight or in FS or FTD
d. PIC time
-
1) Pilot is sole manipulator of the controls of an aircraft for which s/he is rated or has priveleges
2) Flight instructor acting as authorized instructor
3) Instrument student may log PIC time only in simulated IMC, NOT in actual IMC, because s/he has no instrument rate yet (14 CFR 61.3(e))
-
1) Pilot operates aircraft solely by reference to instruments under actual or simulated instrument flight conditions
2) Instructor conducting instrument instruction in IMC
3) To meet recency requirements (61.57(c)) log
-
a) Location and type of each IAP
b) Name of safety pilot if required
-
1) Authorized instruction in aircaft, FS or FTD
2) Instructor must endorse legibly, including
-
a) Description of training given
b) Duration
c) Signature
d) Certificate number and expiration date
-
1) Receive and log ground training from an authorized instructor or accomplish a home-study course of training on the aeronautical knowledge areas that apply to the instrument rating sought
2) Receive a logbook or training record endorsement from an authorized instructor certifying that the person is prepared to take the required knowledge test
3) Receive and log training on the applicable areas of operation of this section from an authorized instructor in an aircraft, flight simulator, or flight training device appropriate to the instrument rating sought
4) Log at least the following minimum aeronautical experience
-
a) At least 50 hours of cross-country flight time as pilot in command, of which at least 10 hours must be in airplanes for an instrument—airplane rating; and
b) A total of 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time on the areas of operation of this section, to include—
-
i) At least 15 hours of instrument flight training from an authorized instructor in the aircraft category for which the instrument rating is sought
ii) At least 3 hours of instrument training that is appropriate to the instrument rating sought from an authorized instructor in preparation for the practical test within the 60 days preceding the date of the test
iii) For an instrument—airplane rating, instrument training on cross- country flight procedures specific to airplanes that includes at least one cross-country flight in an airplane that is performed under IFR, and consists of—
