In Winter

the sun
slips out early.
Trees release
their long blue shadows
in the snow,
and dream of leaves
and feathers.

Everything softens
in this hour;
the light outside the windows
and the light behind our eyes.
We lay the fire
and find our ways
to keep each other warm.
